What is Monterey Weed-Hoe?

Monterey Weed-Hoe is a 48.3% MSMA product that is widely used in agriculture. It is a postemergence selective grass killer that can be used on lawn areas to control such weeds as Crabgrass, Goosegrass, Nutgrass and Dallisgrass. There are a number of MSMA products on the market, but Monterey Weed-Hoe is the most concentrated.

What kind of lawns can I use Monterey Weed-Hoe on?

Monterey Weed-Hoe can be used on both warm season and cool season grasses. It should not be used on Bahiagrass, Carpetgrass, Centipedegrass, St. Augustinegrass or Dichondra types of turf.

Is this the best way to control crabgrass?

No. A preemergence herbicide applied in the late winter is the best way to control crabgrass. However, if you have forgotten to do this or had a failure for any reason, Monterey Weed-Hoe is your best back-up.

When is the best time to apply Monterey Weed-Hoe?

Usually between May and July is the best time to apply Monterey Weed-Hoe, when the crabgrass is actively growing.

Can I use Monterey Weed-Hoe on newly seeded turf?

Monterey Weed-Hoe should not be applied until after the turf has had a third mowing. Do not reseed until two weeks after the last application.

How should I apply Monterey Weed-Hoe to my turf?

Assume you mow your lawn every seven days and you water every other day. Apply Monterey Weed-Hoe on the fourth day after mowing. Wait 24 hours and water the lawn. If a second application is needed, repeat the same procedure two weeks later.

What can I expect to see once I apply Monterey Weed-Hoe?

The crabgrass will start to yellow or redden in about 3 days following application. A second application may be needed in two weeks. After that, the crabgrass will wither and die. There may be temporary yellowing in the lawn but it will quickly outgrow this.

Will Monterey Weed-Hoe control Nutgrass?

Monterey Weed-Hoe has been used for years to control nutgrass. Recently, we have added another product, Nutgrass 'Nihilator, that is more effective on nutgrass than MSMA. Since nutgrass is harder to control, more applications of Monterey Weed-Hoe may be necessary. Spot treatments are also recommended with nutgrass, since it does not usually cover the entire lawn.

Will Monterey Weed-Hoe control Dallisgrass?

Dallisgrass is a wide leaf grass that grows in a clump and flattens out when it is mowed. Again, spot treatment of the grass, as outlined above, is the best way to control Dallisgrass. Up to three treatments may be needed.

How much Monterey Weed-Hoe do I use?

Use 1-2 ounces (2-4 tablespoons) in a 2.5 gallon tank sprayer. This will cover 1000 square feet of turf. For additional information see supplemental label.

Can Monterey Weed-Hoe be used with a hose end sprayer?

No.

Can I use Monterey Weed-Hoe in my flower beds?

Monterey Weed-Hoe is only registered for usage on lawns.

Is Monterey Weed-Hoe temperature responsive?

Yes, the warmer the temperature, the better it works. In fact, Monterey Weed-Hoe should not be used if the daytime temperatures are below 70 degrees F. Monterey Weed-Hoe works the best at 80-90 degrees F.

Will Monterey Weed-Hoe stain sidewalks, driveways, etc.?

Monterey Weed-Hoe is an odorless, non staining, liquid material.

Is Monterey Weed-Hoe expensive?

No, Monterey Weed-Hoe is very economical. At the application rate of 1.5 oz. per 1000 sq. ft., a $20.00 quart of material will cost approximately $0.90 per application. A second application will double this figure, still only costing you $1.80 per 1000 sq. ft. of coverage.
