Dormant Sprays For Fruit Trees and Certain Ornamentals
by Dr. Garden

Dr. Garden gets a lot of calls about the proper timing and products to use as a dormant spray on backyard fruit trees. Dormant sprays control diseases such as peach leaf curl, brown spot, scab, etc. and insect and mite eggs.

Liqui-Cop is a true liquid copper that is widely used in agriculture. It is a replacement for the old Bordeaux sprays. It does not require lime to be mixed with it. For fruit trees we recommend two applications, one in the fall after leaves have fallen and another in the spring or late winter just before the buds begin to swell. Do not apply Liqui-Cop during the bloom period. For a complete list of diseases and plants that Liqui-Cop can be applied to see the label here.

Now let's look at insects. Scale is a problem on most fruit trees as well as overwintering eggs from mites, aphids and other insects. This can be handled with an application of Saf-T-Side, which is a spray oil emulsion made with highly paraffinic based petroleum oils. Saf-T-Side™ should be applied while the trees are dormant. Thorough coverage is necessary since it must come in contact with the scales and eggs to be effective. See Saf-T-Side product label here.

With these products your dormant fruit trees are taken care of and you will have a good disease free harvest next summer. Dr. Garden also has a suggestion that you mix the Saf-T-Side™ with the Liqui-Cop so it is all done at once. This will save an extra application. Happy harvest!
