Unplanted areas need to be free of weeds since they are unsightly and can be a fire hazard. Also, they are a source of weed seed that will make its way into your yard. Some examples of unplanted areas are vacant lots, areas between fences and sidewalks, ditch banks, drainage areas, driveways, patios, hillsides, etc. Here are some suggestions on how to take care of this problem.
Weed Impede™ is a pre-emergence herbicide that needs to be put down before the weeds germinate. This means in the fall in California and Arizona, and early spring in other states. After application, rainfall or irrigation moves the product into the soil to prevent seed germination. If weeds are already up, a combination with Roundup® or Remuda is advised which will kill existing weeds and then Weed Impede™ will prevent new weed and seed from germinating.
For general weed control Dr. Garden recommends Remuda. This is a 41% glyphosate product that is used as a general purpose post emergence herbicide. It controls weeds and grasses and at a higher rate controls perennial and woody species of plants. If the weather is cool, use with Herbicide Helper for faster results.
Remember, controlling weeds in the unplanted area is an important part of the overall appearance of your property. Go out and get them weeds!
