Springtime Hints for the Garden . . .

We have lots of new products to help you get things in shape this spring!

Get that preemergence material down on the lawn for crabgrass control. Crab and Spurge Preventer is our newest addition to our Weed Control line. This preemergence herbicide contains Dimension and not only prevents weed seed from germinating, it also kills newly emerged crabgrass in your lawn. We call that 'reach back" in this product will still eliminated crabgrass that it up to 4 weeks old! It's also great on spurge and lots of other weeds.

Use Weed Impede to prevent weeds in your flower beds, ground covers, around trees and shrubs to give 6 months weed control in these areas. In non planted areas, such as driveways, along fences, around buildings, patios, walkways, etc, where you don't want weed growth spray early to keep weeds away. If weeds are already growing, mix Weed Impede with Remuda (41% glyphosate like Roundup^®) for control the existing weeds and Weed Impede will go into the soil to prevent further weed growth. This combination of pre and post emergence products will kill existing weeds and prevent new ones from emerging.

Dandelions and other broadleaf weeds come up in the lawn in the beginning of spring. If these broadleaf weeds are not controlled with the pre emergence materials, Spurge Power is a great tool for control of existing broadleaf weeds in your lawn. If you've got tough weeds like oxalis, wild violet, clover, spurge, etc, purchase a bottle of our new Spurge Power. This product has 3 active ingredients that work together for control of most all broadleaf weeds.

Now let's look at some specific problems you will have to deal with early in the spring... slugs and snails! With rain come these damaging pests. If you have pets then SLUGGO^® is the product of choice. SLUGGO^® does not contain metaldehyde so it can be used safely around dogs, cats and other pets.

No pets? 7½% Snail & Slug Granules can be used for severe snail and slug infestations. This formulation is the highest concentration of metaldehyde available and is a very small pellet size. The granules are easy to spread in any area of the garden but should not be used where animals frequent. Snails and slugs love small bedding plants so make sure to protect them as soon as you plant.

Spring is the time when bedding plants go into the ground. It is also the time when Phytophthora (a soil borne disease) is most prevalent. If you plant bedding plants and they look like they are being starved for water, you probably have Phytophthora in the soil. Agri-Fos and Aliette^® are the only products a homeowner can use to prevent these diseases. See our Agri-Fos with Pentra-Bark product specifically labeled for control of Sudden Oak Death.

Bugs on your plants? Take Down Garden Spray is available in two formulations as a safe alternative to Dursban^®. This product is made from a combination of natural pyrethrin and canola oil. It gives a quick knockdown as well as residual insect control and is safe to use on vegetables, fruit trees, citrus and ornamental plants. Available in both RTU (ready to use) and concentrate.

Go-Die Gopher Bait is now available for those of you that pull your hair out trying to get rid of gophers! This Strychnine bait is very effective for control of those pesky gophers that eat your plant roots. This product needs to be handled carefully and is only used as a sub-soil application. Read label for details on this new product.

If you have a vegetable garden, weeds will be a problem. One of the few products registered for use in vegetable gardens is Vegetable & Ornamental Weeder. Plant the garden, apply Vegetable & Ornamental Weeder and water it in for about 3 months of weed control.

Suckers around the base of the tree are always a problem in the first of spring. Sucker Stopper RTU does and excellent job of handling these. Apply before they are 6" long or cut them off and apply to the cut. This plant growth regulator is easy to use and you should get about 6 months of sucker control.

If mistletoe is a problem in your area, early spring is the best time to control this plant parasite just before the trees leaf out. Florel^® brand Growth Regulator is the only product available to do the job. It is also used to prevent nuisance fruit control on pears, walnuts, apples, liquidambar, crab apples, olives, etc. Spring is the time to apply Florel to prevent messy fruit next summer. Apply Florel at mid to full bloom to eliminate unwanted fruit.
