What is Olive Fruit Fly Trap & Lure?
It is a trap and lure system for the olive fruit fly that appeared in California in 1998. The maggots burrow into the fruit making it unusable. It is a sex pheromone that attracts the moth and a sticky trap to determine the time and number trapped. It can be used as a monitor to determine when to begin spraying with Monterey Garden Insect Spray.
How do I use the system?
Make a small hole in the plastic sex lure. Then punch a ¼ inch hole in the clear pouch to activate the food lure. Attach a hanger to the two lures, peal the release paper from the yellow sticky trap and hang in the tree hanger.
Where do I hang the traps?
Place 1–2 feet into the canopy in an area free of foliage about 12 inches around the trap. You can anchor the bottom of the sticky trap with the extra hanger.
When do I start trapping?
As early as late February in some areas. If used for monitoring, a single trap for numerous trees will be ok. Dispose of traps when full of insects or the food source is gone.
